History of NFC STE

        NFC STE has been established to organize, coordinate, and carry out research and engineering for the nuclear fuel cycle of Ukraine.

         The main NFC STE objectives are:

  • to develop a concept and program for establishing a nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) of the nuclear power industry of Ukraine;

  • to provide scientific support for Ukraine's NPPs in the area of nuclear fuel;

  • to provide expert reviews on nuclear fuel;

  • establishes research, technological, and test framework for carrying out nuclear fuel cycle related activities;

  • conducts research into fuel elements, absorber elements, fuel assemblies and their engineering design to establish an industrial framework for the fabrication of fuel for NPPs;

  • develops new fuel, absorber, and structural materials to design fuel elements and fuel assemblies of enhanced reliability, operability, and economic efficiency;

  • to carry out research and development in the area of nuclear military material utilization to manufacture fuel for NPPs;

  • to develop methodologies; to model and substantiate operability of reactor core components;

  • to carry out research into nuclear fuel material science and conduct tests to create enhanced-safety nuclear reactors;

  • participates in the development and implementation of state conversion programs, state program for fundamental and applied research into the utilization of nuclear materials and nuclear and radiation technologies catering to various branches of economy and other state needs;

  • and higher educational institutions in implementing cutting edge technologies and training specialists;

  • to carry out research-and-development activities in conjunction with national and foreign laboratories and companies;

  • to carry out other types of activities.

Pursuant to the Order of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine of July 28, 1999 No. 221," an Authorized Commission for Selection of the Base Institution for Establishment of the Center of Nuclear Fuel and Reactor Core Design (CRCD)" approved 'Nuclear Fuel Cycle' Science and Technology Establishment of the National Science Center 'Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology' (NFC STE NSC KIPT) as the base organization for establishing CRCD. The Authorized Commission approved CRCD structure and staffing consisting of:

      -    CRCD Head,

      -    Chief Engineer,

      -    Three departments:

  • Department for Nuclear Fuel Design                             8 persons;
