Research Description: Dr. Lyakhno has been engaged in developing a magnetic spectrometer with a helium streamer chamber. With this setup he experimented to measure the asymmetry of cross sections for the 4НеТ and 4Не3Не reactions in the photon energy range below 100 MeV. The polarized photon beam was produced as a result of coherent bremsstrahlung of high-energy electrons in a diamond single crystal, the beam polarization being Pγ~75%. Dr. Lyakhno has conducted treatment of the experimental information obtained by the film technique. The multipole analysis of two-body (γ,p) and (γ,n) reactions of 4He nuclear disintegration was performed in the photon energy range Eγ<60 MeV. In the course of the multipole analysis, use was made of the experimental data on differential cross sections, cross-sectional asymmetry with linearly polarized photons, and on the phases of elastic (p,3He) scattering. The devised approach makes it possible to calculate with rather general assumptions the total cross sections for spin S=1 transitions in the 4Не(γ,p)Т and 4Не(γ,n)3Не reactions. These transitions may be specified by the 4He nuclear states with nonzero orbital momenta of nucleons, and also, by other effects being beyond the scope of the shell model of the nucleus.
Dr. Lyakhno defended his Ph. D. thesis in 2009.
