VACUUM-ARC COATING: TECHNOLOGIES & EQUIPMENT

The coatings prodused by our method are characterized with high Ádhesion and hardness (îV 1800 … 8000). They have a high resistance to frictional wear, influence of air atmosphere and corrosive medium, resistance to erosion under influence of cavitation, steam-droplet, gas and dust flows.
The coatings are formed by condensation of metal from plasma flows. These plasma flows are generated by the cathode spot of the vacuum-arc discharge in conditions of bombardment by ions of the coating material. Addition of reactionary gas in the working chamber at low pressure allows synthesis of coatings on the basis of compositions metal - gas.

The first industrial plants for depositing of wear resistant coating by the vacuum-arc method have been developed in the NSC KIPT. The created here technology of hardening of cutting tools by deposition of TiN layers were handed over to the USA by the license agreement in 1980. The new technology has received wide circulation in all industrially-developed countries of the world.

ADVANTAGES OF THE METHOD IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER METHODS

  • Application of coatings practically from any metals and alloys is possible;
  • Synthesis of coatings from compositions such as oxides, nitrides, carbides of various structure and compound, including multiple layers are possible;
  • The adhesion of the vacuum-arc coatings is much higher (up to 25 kg/mm sq.) than that of coatings prodused by galvanic process and any other methods;

  • The temperature of modifiable products is determined by parameters of process (from 20°C to 1000°C);
