Laboratory was founded in 1974 on the base of laboratory VM-1 (pure metals and alloys, head V.M. Amonenko) which was the part of the department of vacuum metallurgy VM founded in the beginning the 1950s. The first head of the laboratory was V.M. Azhazha, who subsequently was director of ISSPMT, academician of NAS of Ukraine. Laboratory was also headed in different period of times by candidate of physics and mathematics P.N. Vyugov and doctor of technical science S.D. Lavrinenko. Now the head of the laboratory is Doctor of physics and mathematics N.N. Pylypenko.

The main scientific lines of the laboratory are vacuum and high vacuum metallurgy; physics and material science of pure and super pure metals and alloys with specific physical properties; technological processes of production of pure metals and structural materials for reactor construction, electronic and other fields of technique. Among the basic results of scientific research of laboratory must be noted investigations and development of new methods of metal refining, production of some metals of record purity and determination of early unknown physical properties, interconnection of chemical composition, structure and physical characteristics of metals and alloys, activities for synthesis of structure materials for nuclear power.

Research workers of the laboratory participate in the development of industrial technologies of production of zirconium, hafnium and calcium of nuclear purity, technologies of refining of niobium, gallium, scandium, in the production of new getter materials, materials for medicine.

As part of the department and NSC KIPT laboratory carries out the joint works with scientific institutes and enterprises of Ukraine and UIS for production of components of nuclear-fuel cycle, provision of nuclear power by functional materials with specific properties.
