Description of the scientific achievements of A.I.Akhiezer

Quantum electrodynamics

  • Theory of coherent scattering of photons from nuclei is developed (1936).
  • The differential cross-section for the photon-photon scattering at the energy much higher than the rest energy of electron is found (1936).
  • The radiation corrections to the electron-electron and electron-positron scattering are calculated (1953).
  • Theory of electromagnetic (electron and photon) showers in high magnetic fields is worked out (1992).

Nuclear and neutron physics

  • Theory of resonance absorption of slow neutrons in multiplicating media is worked out (1947).
  • Theory of diffractional scattering of neutrons and charged partiñles by absorbing nucleuses is constructed (1949).
  • Theory of diffraction scattering and diffraction fission of light nuclei (deuteron, tritium) from the heavy ones is worked out (1955).
  • The scattering of slow neutrons in Fermi-liquid is studied (1961).
  • Theory of coherent interaction of fast charged particles with crystal fields is developed (1971).
  • Hypothesis about spontaneous magnetisation of neutron matter due to the nuclear interaction between neutrons is proposed. The hypothesis is used to explain the magnetic field of pulsars (1995).
  • Theory of magnetohydrodynamic and shock waves in neutron matter is developed (1997).
  • Theory of superfluid nuclear matter based on Fermi-liquid approach is developed (1997).

Solid state physics

  • Theory of sound absorption in dielectrics and metals is developed. Mechanism of the absorption of acoustic waves due to the modulation of the phonon frequency and electron energy with the acoustic field is proposed (Akhiezer damping) (1938).
  • Theory of relaxation in ferromagnets due to the interaction of spin waves between themselves and with phonons is developed (1944).
  • Theory of elastic and inelastic scattering of slow neutrons from crystal lattice is developed (1947).
  • Theory of interaction of spin waves with acoustic waves in ferromagnets and ferrodielectrics is worked out. The phenomenon of the ferroacoustic resonance is predicted (1956).

Plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics

  • Kinetic theory of plasma oscillations in magnetic field is proposed (1947).
  • The phenomenon of instability of plasma with a beam of charged particles is predicted. (1949).
  • The criteria of stability and instability of magnetohydrodynamical waves are studied (1958).
  • Theory of fluctuations in the two-temperature plasma is developed (1961).
  • Theory of superconductive Fermi-liquid is developed. It is shown that the dense electron-positron plasma may be superconductive (1994).
  • Theory of instabilities in quark plasma created at collisions of fast heavy nuclei is developed (1996).

Foundation of the scientific school

The theoretical scientific school in physics founded by A.Akhiezer is of surprising universality. The works of A.Akhiezer and his disciples in the above-mentioned fields as well as in the physics of elementary particles, statistical physics, etc. are world-wide known.
